What makes you happy? I asked myself that question 30 years ago. Our kids were in middle school, my husband was running our farm. I was searching for a fresh purpose. “What makes me happy and how can I contribute?” I’ll tell you what makes me happy. My passion in life is helping people. When people hear me say this, they often think it is some disingenuous remark. They think I’m telling them what they want to hear. From the depth of my soul my passion in life is helping people. 30 years ago, I saw an opportunity. Selling real estate seemed like an opportunity with unlimited possibilities. At first, I thought it was something that could help me supplement our farm’s income. As time went on though, I found that my desire to help people was one of the things that gave me an advantage at matching my clients with the properties that were going to meet their needs. Looking back, one of the best things I’ve ever done was taking a chance on myself.
We are in the process of trying to bring special people into Coldwell Banker, The Real Estate Shoppe, Inc. The right agent for our business will be: intelligent, someone who genuinely wants to help people get what they need, and someone who will listen. This business is about listening. For example, I was at a restaurant a few days ago and overheard a friend say that she and her husband were looking to downsize and move into a smaller home. So, I took note of that conversation and I made a point to call my friend and ask her how I could help. I let her know that downsizing sounds good at first, but that it’s one of the hardest things for people to achieve. People have less space to put their things, they have fewer personal spaces. . . it’s just something that is really a challenge. After our conversation, I learned that she really wasn’t interested in downsizing, she just wasn’t happy with the house that they were in. Sometimes, it isn’t about selling houses, it’s about helping people talk through what they need.
